Does Reiki Work?

Many people ask, “Does Reiki work?” as it may seem that in a technological age, a hands on healing system does seem quite outdated. There are medical treatments for everything now, and the holistic, complimentary systems are often easily forgotten in favour of a quick fix.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki was discovered by a Japanese monk, Mikau Usui, in the early 1900s. After a long period of isolation, fasting, and meditation, he discovered enlightenment and the healing art of Reiki; ‘rei’ meaning universal and ‘ki’ meaning energy. He developed a system of healing using his hands, tuning into the universal energy and directing it towards people in a healing manner. After a devastating earthquake in Japan in the early 1900s, Mikau soon realised that sharing his art form would be the only solution to keep Reiki healing people, so he began attuning others to Reiki so they could also practice it. My own reiki master who attuned me is from the Western lineage, the origin of which is directly linked to Mikau Usui and is an authentic representation of Mikau’s original treatments.

How Reiki Works During A Treatment

By placing my hands on the body, or just over it, I can channel universal energy through my hands into my clients, creating relaxation and calm and having a healing effect on the body. Some people may experience pins and needles or tingling, a sense of complete relaxation, or even nothing at all. However, this doesn't mean that the treatment isn't working.

Who Can Have Reiki?

There are no restrictions as to who can have Reiki, and there is no need to wear any special clothing or avoid eating before treatment. The only thing I advise is to drink plenty of water before and after treatment to continue the detoxing process, as toxins and blocked energy will be moved and the lymphatic system benefits from a good drain following treatment. There are many examples of people who are reticent about having Reiki, but who are surprised at the profound effects it can have, making them feel lighter, more energetic, and relaxed after treatment. Reiki can be used to maintain health and wellbeing or specifically to help as a complimentary therapy to treatments for anxiety, depression, or physical ailments. Whilst no Reiki therapist should or would tell you they will cure you, as the outcome is never ensured, it will certainly increase your sense of wellbeing after your treatment.

My own clients come to me for a range of reasons, like emotional issues; to reduce stress and anxiety. It can also be applied in combination with massage, which can be ideal to restore posture and support the spine, hips, and shoulders. Reiki has uses in promoting reproductive health, calming animals, providing complimentary therapy for animals during treatments, and children are particularly receptive to reiki.
